Public Service Health Science Endorsement
This endorsement is ideal for students interested in entering the medical field (nursing, sonography, chiropractic care, etc.). The emphasis is to prepare the students for the coursework they will encounter in their degree fields.
Students must take endorsement specific classes beginning their sophomore year:
• 8th Grade ~ PE / Health
• 9th Grade ~ Biology
• 10th Grade ~ Chemistry / Medical Terminology / Principles of Health Science
• 11th Grade ~ Anatomy and Physiology / Physics
• 12th Grade ~ Pathology / Internship
Students in our upper-level science classes visit:
• Surgical clinics at Bluebonnet Osteopathic Surgery Center in Waxahachie, Texas to observe first-hand clinical surgery procedures to repair various bones
• Baylor Scott and White Hospital to tour the Pathology Lab facilities where slides of tissues straight from the operating room are made, observed, identified, and referred back to the physician at the surgery table waiting for the results.
How the program works:
Students complete upper-level Anatomy and Pathophysiology classes and can then be placed in an internship of their interest.
Students will spend time each week in the field, under direct supervision of a health care professional of their interest.
Student interns are initially engaged in just shadowing their respective professional mentor before being given tasks to complete and autonomy to act on their own with respect to skills and knowledge taught to them in class and by their mentor.
Student interns complete a log of the hours they work each week along with a reflection piece on the work they did and the responsibilities they were given.
Student interns work at these places of business during the school year. Many of our interns have been approached by their sponsoring Directors to become full-time employees after graduation.
We have worked with Baylor Scott and White Hospital, Dr. Larae Mason's Veterinary Clinic and The Mansfield Chiropractic Clinic for placement of interns.
